Trees – pre-application advice
Our pre-application advice service
If you’d like detailed guidance before submitting a tree work application, you can use our formal pre-application advice service.
The fee for this service is £86.
To get started:
Call us (during normal office hours): 01590 646660
Or email: trees@newforestnpa.gov.uk
What happens after you contact us?
We’ll acknowledge your enquiry within three working days.
Our acknowledgement will include:
The name and contact details of the Tree Officer handling your enquiry; your reference number and the date you can expect a full response.
If you need to get in touch with us at any point, please quote your reference number. Your Tree Officer will either arrange a visit or provide written advice within 15 working days.
All advice is based on an objective review of the information you provide, but please note it is without prejudice to any final decision on a future application.
What to include with your enquiry
Please include as much of the following as possible:
- Address and a simple site location plan
- Photographs of the tree(s)
- A description of the works you’re considering
- Your reasons for the proposed works
- Any other information you feel would be helpful
In some cases, we may need to forward your enquiry to an external consultee as part of our process.
Important to know:
We’re unable to carry out full tree health assessments or diagnose tree conditions as part of this service.
If you need a detailed tree inspection, local qualified tree contractors can provide this for you.
You may also want to speak to a professional at the Arboricultural Association.
