An award-winning butchers

Sway Butchers are an award-winning, sixth generation family butchers offering an array of local produce including New Forest pannage pork, venison, beef, lamb and poultry. Master butcher David West (pictured) runs the shop, and his family have been butchers since 1830. Originally from London where his grandfather, father and uncles all had butcher shops, David arrived in Sway in the summer of 1976.

Supporting local

Specialising in local produce, Sway Butchers source meat from Hampshire and Dorset, including many New Forest small holdings. They support a network of small non-intensive farms, that rear grass-fed native breeds, and are run by families that care about animal welfare and the environment.

Grazing animals in the New Forest feed on a variety of plant life, drink from the rivers and streams and interact with the world around them in an organic way. Native and heritage breeds grow at a natural pace, aren’t intensively farmed, and don’t travel long distances to slaughter. This means lower stress, a smaller carbon footprint, and higher-welfare meat that’s richly flavoured and nutritionally superior to its supermarket counterparts.

Serving the community

The shop, based in the picturesque village of Sway, has been serving the community for decades, offering high quality traceable meat with friendly, knowledgeable service. In 2025 they were named Best Supporter of Local Produce in the New Forest National Park Awards.

They are also proud New Forest Marque members. Since joining the New Forest Marque  in 2023, sourcing and networking with local farmers and producers has proved much simpler, meaning their local supply chain is continually expanding.

‘We are passionate about maintaining and growing our local supply chain in the New Forest. We believe it is important that small scale farms survive, as they have done for centuries, to maintain the diversity of the local economy, and of course, cut down food miles.’

- David West, owner of Sway Butchers
