How it all started
Originally launched under the name ‘Forest Friendly Farming’, the New Forest Marque started in 2004 as an initiative to support commoners and smallholders.
The original ‘Forest Friendly’ members were mostly primary producers selling meat, fruit, vegetables, eggs, and wool. They included generations of local farmers with ties to the land, such as commoners who turn out their livestock onto the Forest to graze – a centuries old tradition.
Over time the Marque has evolved. The name change and introduction of the navy logo helped to further the New Forest Marque as a recognised sign of ‘true local produce’. Today, you’ll find the distinctive emblem displayed on many items, from specialty pannage pork to artisan heather honey, to handcrafted leather goods and fine wool clothing. Each product supports not only the local economy, but also the preservation of rural skills, heritage crafts, and the unique biodiversity of the New Forest.
Marque Inspired for artists and craftspeople
There is an incredible amount of artistic talent to be found within the New Forest, and in 2023 the New Forest Marque introduced a new category of members called ‘Inspired’ specifically for local artists and craftspeople.
Inspired is open to anyone that creates original, authentic work that draws inspiration from the landscape, wildlife, heritage and folklore of the New Forest. Initially funded by Arts Council England, Inspired has grown to become a thriving and supportive branch of the New Forest Marque.
Members meet regularly to collaborate and have been actively involved in the local arts community, for example as part of Hampshire Open Studios and with their own dedicated area at the New Forest Show, proudly representing the creativity of the Forest.
