The New Forest is rich in history, with listed buildings, ancient landscapes, and archaeological sites that help tell the story of this unique place. From traditional cottages and farm buildings to buried remains that reveal how people have lived and worked here for centuries, this heritage is a vital part of the National Park’s character.

We advise on all aspects of the historic built environment. As well as overseeing work to listed buildings and designating and protecting conservation areas, we’re also responsible for identifying, celebrating, and caring for the best, most typical, and unspoilt examples of the unprotected built environment across the New Forest.

The New Forest was established as a hunting forest in 1079. Its buildings reflect centuries of rural life, craftsmanship, and royal influence.
